When was the last time you got “Googled”?

If you’re like most website owners, you just can’t get Googled enough. In fact, while it may be “normal” for most website owners to get Googled once or twice a week, I’ll bet you would love to get Googled several times every hour. Am I right? Yeah, I thought so.

So you will be interested in this study from Think Eyetracking. They compared eye tracking of Google users from 2005 and compared it with Google users in 2008. The result is surprising.

Google Search Eye Tracking Behavior 2005 versus 2008

As you can see people are so used to Google giving them good results, they have stopped scanning the results and have just started looking at the top few.

According to the article 79% of users click the top 3 links.

And while the study doesn’t address this, I suspect that the amount of time between searching and clicking on a result have gone down as well–meaning most people are clicking with just a brief scan of the results, rather than actually reading them

What does that mean to you?

Get to the top for your best search phrases. If you’re not in the top 3 you’re not likely to get Googled very often–and you know you want it.

You also need to make sure the title tags of your pages are attractive to search visitors. If you are targeting a particular phrase make sure your page title not only contains that phrase but is also easily scannable and teases the searcher. You need to grab the attention of the searcher in the first second after the results come up.

Try it. It will make you money.
