I’ve got some explosive news for you about gathering, keeping and profiting from RSS and email subscribers…
Yup, you’ve been lied to–and the lies have hurt you.
Read what just about anyone says on getting and keeping subscribers and they will tell you a bunch of stuff you should never do because it offends your subscribers.
So you’ve been careful. You meekly offer your RSS and promise never to spam your email list. You have cowered in fear when a subscriber commented to you how awful it is that you are promoting products where they actually have to SPEND money. You are a little hesitant to hit “send” on a promo email because you are worried some of your subscribers will complain–or worse yet, unsubscribe.
You’ve been told your subscribers are the key to success. You’ve watched as your FeedBurner and Aweber subscriber counts creep up, dreaming of the day when you can display the magic widget with 1,000 readers.
I’m not saying it’s your fault–remember you’ve been lied to–but you need to stop listening to those lies. The truth is YOU DON’T WANT SUBSCRIBERS.
What? Did you really hear me type that?
Yup, I did. You don’t want subscribers. RSS subscribers; email subscribers. You don’t want ‘em.
Yup, that’s it. You want people who will ACT ON YOUR RECOMMENDATION.
Thousands and thousands of RSS and email subscribers feed your ego, but ego don’t pay the bills. What you need to do is find subscribers that will act on your recommendations.
That’s a follower.
The other day I got an email from a friend of mine. I am on his email list and he actually wrote:
“Don’t send people to a squeeze page from your articles, that offends them.”
They’re offended, well, BIG EFFIN’ DEAL.
I am in business to make a profit. In order to make a profit I have to have people who will buy products and services that I recommend. I am looking for followers.
What’s the first characteristic of a follower? THEY SIGN UP FOR YOUR LIST.
It’s a documented fact: Those who sign up for your list are 22.4 times more likely to visit a site on your recommendation than those who do not sign up for your list.
(OK, I made that “22.4″ up, but it’s up there. Trust me.)
When people complain it hurts our ego. When non-followers don’t follow, it hurts our ego and our pocket book.
Most list building advocates tell you to cater to the “least common denominator” on your list. Don’t offend. Don’t send out ads. Don’t tell people to buy. After all, people might unsubscribe. That’s bull pucky.
They are just encouraging you to build your business so it never offends someone who doesn’t read ads, doesn’t like marketing and won’t act on your recommendations.
It’s like trying to sell shampoo to bald guys. (No offense Curly.)
That doesn’t sound like a very profitable strategy to me and I’m sure it doesn’t to you either.
This is simple…visitors, RSS readers and subscribers don’t mean diddly squat unless they buy something. One of my niche sites got 512 unique visitors one day last week. All of them from Reddit.crap–I mean Reddit.com.
Did it stroke my ego to get 512 unique visitors to a site that normally gets 40 or so? Nope. Why? Because none of them made me any money. Not one ad click; not one subscriber.
If you have 500 RSS readers daily you ought to be making a couple thousand a month from your site. If not, you aren’t telling them to buy enough.
So here’s what you do: Make them sign up. Give away enough free teaser information to convince them you’re legit. Make your subscribe offers as tempting as hot sex.
Use a subscribe incentive–even for your RSS readers. It’s easy. I even put together a tutorial for you on it here:
http://www.FullTiltBlogging.com/rssdownload
Then, tell them to buy stuff. Good stuff. Stuff you use and think they should use.
Go pick it up now and put it to work. It will make you money–you do want to make money don’t you? I thought so.
Last night I had a secret conversation with Garry Conn about his competition with John Cow. I told him exactly how he could use a barely legal method to not only win the competition, but put up to $10K extra in his own pockets while doing it.
It’s a strategy that you can imitate–even if you are just starting out–and put money in your pocket pronto.
I’m going to tell you all about it tomorrow. But there’s a catch–it will be a password protected post. To get the password you have to sign up for my email or RSS list.
Then look for my message: “Top Secret Garry Conn Strategy Session”
It will hit your inbox or feed reader around 7am EDT tomorrow.

1Hi Aaron
I’m glad somebody is telling the truth!! I had to learn this the hard way. I ended up with a list of over 28,000 woodworkers who I was didn’t wnat to upset. I would mail them free be and info an almost never emailed them something to buy. They would get up set at me.
Now I know it’s not the number but the quality of the list.
Thanks

2Hi Aaron
We’ve had a few little chats in the past. I’m already subscribed so can I assume I’ll get your email tomorrow? I always like reading your stuff. Definitely cutting edge.
You said you had a mentor program once. Do you still?
I have a few 1/2 baked things in the pot and need to get them moving and could use some guidance… although not sure blogging is the way for a couple of them. Let me know.
thanks!
Christine

3Charles,
Thanks for the comment. WordPress code breaker is your site? I’m sorry, but I’m not in favor of torture. Did you waterboard WordPress to get it to talk?
Hey, get your Blog up so I can ask you a question. I want to change the text that shows up on password protected posts and I can’t figure out where to find the text.
Though in my searching through the files I did find a Crystal Skull.
Christine,
My mentoring program is $4,997.00 and I would love to have you as a student.
But since you sound like a nice person I’ll let you attend for free. Here is the link, don’t share it with anyone: Click here to sign up.

4Originally I stumble onto your blog via a helpful post on the Aweber blog.
I was so grateful I took the time to subscribe to your blog because in the little time I have been receiving your emails and offers I have already learnt so many helpful tips that I have applied to my own business.
I have learnt to recognize innovative, driven individuals and as we all know mentoring by these individuals is paramount to success. After enrolling in your Mentoring class today I already feel the opportunities and possibilities in the near future and am very excited.
Impressed by the way you market your business (energetic, innovative, honesty and shooting from all angles) I am more than eager to learn as much as I can from you. I love your humorous but direct writing and have been motivated by your material.
Additionally I am grateful you have made it accessible to those who cannot afford these opportunities AS YET!
Bring it on Aaron and Thanks again

8Fran,
No, this isn’t the lead blogging seminar. That’s still coming up.
But I can give you free access to the mentoring program since you sound like a nice person. Just don’t share this link with ANYONE! I am not making this link public, so keep it to yourself.

9Looks like I need to rethink some things. Watching the subscriber go up is good, but to take things to the next level, I need to start thinking outside the box. Thanks for the info, Aaron!

10I love this post soooooo much. As it makes sense, it’s exactly what I have been thinking about, but nobody is teaching it. Most follow the shotgun method where you get tons of subs and get a fraction to purchase. I’d much prefer a following, that trust my knowledge and suggestions.
thanks.
