We all want more traffic from Google. But here’s the thing: We don’t just want visitors, we want visitors who will do something.
We want them to fill out a form, buy a product, click on an ad.
When you are looking at keywords for your website or blog, consider targeting keywords that will not only give you traffic, but that will give you traffic that produces results.
In almost every market niche there is a very general term that gets the majority of the traffic. In one of my blog niches it is “marriage.” While that might bring the most traffic, it’s not going to be very profitable traffic. A much more profitable search term is much longer and much more specific. One of my most profitable terms is “how to seduce your wife”–which I have #1 position on Google for in most areas.
When you are researching phrases for your market, consider those phrases that point to an action you want your visitor to take. If you have a how to book, “how to” might be a good phrase to target. If you have a product to sell, “buy” is a great phrase to target.

1Hmmm…..I have a LONG way to go when it comes to keywords and SEO. But I’ve started up a couple of test blogs to have a bit of a play.
Is there a google advantage to running a blog on their own free blogging platform?

2SEO, what an interesting phrase. I’ve study it for a little while and found it very complex indeed. However, the point you just made in your post is so simple and yet sooo profound. Thanks a light buld just lit in my head. SEO its kind of like a HELP WANTED sign always noticeable.
Thanks,
Wanda

7Lightening,
Sorry, I didn’t catch your question sooner.
Blogger doesn’t give you much search engine juice. The best juice you can get is to put up blogs on WordPress.com (not WordPress.org–big difference). But keep in mind WordPress.com won’t let you do any type of advertising or other monetization.
So…in my not often humble opinion…
Blogger is a great free platform but it is pretty much the same (search engine wise) as hosting your own site. I push for self-hosting because it puts you in complete control of your content.

8Yeah,Aaron is absolutely right. For a professional blogger,self-hosting is the only answer. I think Aaron’s “How to….” or “Buy…” suggested phrases are definitely the killer strategies to get Google rank.

9Hey Aaron, Ive been playign with KW phrases and trying to setermine what people are searching for when it comes to things they ‘need” or “want”. I guess very similiar to whay you’re on about here. I’m trying to determine action phrases. I think an obvious one might be “cheap” I was also thinking along the lines of what people are wanting to start, and stop or maybe change. I think maybe an obvious one (not my niche of choice) start losing weight, stop gaining weight.

10I’ve just begun to work at understanding keywords and SEO in the past 6 months. I realize it’s an important concept, but it is challenging to learn.
Thanks for your help.
