A few weeks ago I was signing up for a bundle of RSS feeds using my Google Reader account. In Google Reader you can simply put in the URL of a site and it will automatically find the feed on the page.

I was amazed to find that a number of the top blogs in the market niche I was targeting didn’t have an RSS feed that Google Reader could find from their main page.

That’s not good.

To make sure your RSS feed can be automatically detected, try these tips:

  1. If your main page is NOT your blog, put a link to your RSS feed on your main page.
  2. Make sure a link to your RSS feed is on every page of your blog (this is typically done automatically by most theme designs, but some designers don’t place the feed on each page of the template.)
  3. Make sure the feed on your Blog is the correct feed. If you use FeedBurner.com or some other feed service the feed being displayed may not be the feed you want for visitors.
