In my book there are two kinds of marketing: Active Marketing and Passive Marketing.

Active marketing calls for a specific action on the part of the prospect: Click here, buy this now, call now, etc.

Passive marketing is independent of the message and is best represented by the banner ads at the next to a blog post. Sure they want to be licked, but no one is telling you to click them.

Passive marketing is popular because:

  1. It doesn’t take any real effort.
  2. It is socially acceptable in the blogging community.

Now for people are established, earning bloggers, number 1 isn’t the problem. They work hard ever day and are probably willing to make the effort.

But what about number 2?

Most bloggers and blog readers are OK with putting ads on a site, but do not want the blogger him/herself actually pitching products. While they are happy when the blogger makes money—and often want his/her advice about how to do it themselves—they reject bloggers who LOOK like they are asking for the sale.

It’s perception about marketing, not reality.

Active marketing—asking for the sale—is where the money is. Keeping that simple fact from bloggers who want to make money from their blogs is silly. Marketing is marketing. Passive marketing is still marketing, it’s just BAD marketing. It makes very little money per view.

Active marketing is no different except it is much more effective.

So let me ask you: If you want to make money blogging, do you want to do it the worst way possible or the best? Yeah, I thought so.
