If you aren’t making money from your blog or other website, this is the most important 488 words you will ever read.
When someone visits your blog, what do you most want them to do?
I have been to some blogs where the goal is to inform–to give people information they will find valuable.
I have been to blogs where the goal is simply to entertain. “Make ‘em laugh” as the song goes.
But if your goal is to actually make money blogging you will want to think through this a little further. Here’s why:
The only way for your blog to make money is for someone to eventually buy something. Now they may buy it now, on your blog, or they may buy it later. But eventually they have to buy something.
In addition if you are the one making money, they have to either buy it from you or from someone else who will pay you when they buy it from them.
Are you with me so far? Good.
If your only goal is to get your readers either informed or entertained, the number of visitors you have to generate to make any money is HUGE. This is one of the reasons why many small volume bloggers just aren’t making any money on their Adsense or other contextual ad programs.
So let’s think about more specific and money making goals you may have for your visitors. Here are some ideas:
That the visitor will…
- Click on a Related Advertiser Link
- Subscribe
- Tell Other People
This can be a great way to increase your click thrus. There are a number of ways to get more clicks on your advertiser links, and I will cover those over the next few days.
This is the goal I have when people visit this blog. In fact I state it as: “That the visitor will perceive the site as valuable and be compelled to subscribe via email or RSS feed.”
[ By the way…if you aren’t subscribed, you need to go here now… ]
When you get people to subscribe you have the opportunity to remind them again and again not only to visit your site and view your wonderful content, but also to purchase products and services which pay you a commission.
You may simply want more people to come and read your wonderful content. If so, encouraging your visitor to recommend/up vote your post at a networking site, tell one of their friends via email and/or post a link about it on their blog can be a great goal.
One way to do this is through…oh, wait, I’ll have to cover that in another post. It’s an idea you’ve seen used before but when you find out how it works, you’ll kick yourself for not thinking of it sooner.
Be looking for some posts over the next week explaining each of these in more detail.
